What is in Your Heart is What You Will Find in God

So, you want to find God? Which God do you seek? The God beyond time and space, or the God that is everywhere and in all things? The God of judgment and punishment, or the God of love and mercy? Do you seek many Gods or just one God? The God who sets the universe in motion and then takes a lunch break, or the God who pulls the strings behind historical events? The God of art and beauty or the God of intellect and intelligence? The God of law and order or the God of goodness and oneness? The God who listens to prayer or the God who doesn't give a shit about you? Or the God who is dead and the God who never existed? Which do you seek?

You can find all of these Gods and more - they can all be found, even the God who doesn't exist can be found. You set out on your journey from where you begin right now. What you find in the end only takes you back to the beginning, the place where you started. What do you find in your heart? Only what is there right now. Change what is in your heart, and you will find a different God.

Iamblichus on Sacred Language

"The language of sacred peoples is preferred to that of other men, and with good reason. For the names do not exactly preserve the same meaning when they are translated; rather, there are certain idioms in every nation that are impossible to express in the language of another. Moreover, even if one were to translate them, this would not preserve their same power. For the barbarian names possess weightiness and great precision, participating in less ambiguity, variability and multiplicity of expression. For all these reasons, then, they are adapted to the superior beings.

"And it is necessary that the prayers of the ancients, like sacred places of sanctuary, are preserved ever the same and in the same manner, with nothing of alternative origin either removed from or added to them. For this is the reason why all these things in place at the present time have lost their power, both the names and the prayers."

-- Iamblichus, De Mysteriis 7.5 (transl. Clarke, Dillon, Hershbell)
